The EPA has developed the Air Quality Index (AQI) which was formerly known as the Pollutant Standards Index, which reports the levels of ozone and other common air pollutants. The index makes it easier for the public to understand the health significance of air pollution levels. Air quality is measured by a nation-wide monitoring system that records concentrations of ozone and several other air pollutants at more than a thousand different locations across the country.

In Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) has ambient air monitoring stations located throughout the state. In the local area, there are monitoring stations located in Vinton, Lake Charles Lighthouse Lane, Westlake, Carlyss, and McNeese. Ozone is monitored at the Carlyss, Vinton and Westlake stations.
